Skills for the Future

Skills for the Future trains and supports people from diverse backgrounds to start their careers in the museums and galleries sector. We have run these projects since 2011, with support and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Our previous three programmes have seen 57 learners undertake one year placements in 35 host museums across Scotland. 87% of these learners went on to find employment in the heritage, arts or third sector.

In January 2018 we launched Skills for Success, our biggest programme to date.  Skills for Success will see a cohort of 22 non-graduate learners (18 entry level and 4 management level) taking part in a one year paid placement in museums across Scotland while undertaking the SVQ3 Museums and Galleries Practice, a nationally recognised qualification.

Applications for host museums and learners are now closed.

Skills Development Programme

The Skills Development Programme provides a range of skills development opportunities for staff and volunteers within the sector. These opportunities are a combination of courses and workshops delivered by MGS and partner organisations as well as signposted opportunities we think you will find useful.

  • Courses - We work with key organisations and professionals to offer high-quality courses addressing the training needs within the sector. These courses can be between one and three days long and are usually run in Edinburgh.
  • Workshops - Workshops consist of half day, informal, introductory sessions on a range of topics based in Edinburgh. These sessions are an opportunity to deliver resources and for participants to share good practice, ideas and network with others in the sector.
  • Surgeries - Telephone appointments with the Investment Manager to discuss potential MGS funding applications.
  • Conferences - Our biennial conference and one day events are an opportunity to learn and network. Click here for our 2017 Conference Call for Papers.
  • Transformers - MGS are funding seven places on the MA's Transformers programme. Visit our project page for details.
