Katie Stevenson - Chairperson
Katie Stevenson is Assistant Vice-Principal Collections and Digital Content at the University of St Andrews, with a portfolio that includes oversight of the University museums and libraries. Prior to this post she was Keeper of Scottish History and Archaeology at National Museums Scotland, CEO of the digital technology company Smart History, Director of the Institute of Scottish Historical Research at the University of St Andrews, and a senior lecturer in medieval history at the University of St Andrews. She holds a degree in History and Archaeology from the University of Melbourne and a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh.
Kirsty Lingstadt is Head of Digital Library and Deputy Director of Library and University Collections at the University of Edinburgh. Her focus is currently on digital collections and their discovery, digital preservation and digital scholarship. She has worked in museums, archives and libraries for over 20 years. She previously worked at Historic Environment Scotland (formerly RCAHMS) where she was responsible for collections and data which included the development of Canmore. She has also worked for South Lanarkshire Council Museums, the Scottish Mining Museum and Fife Council Museums Service. Within all these organisations she undertook a wide range of tasks managing collections, researching and arranging exhibition programmes and associated activities across a range of venues as well as running community outreach programmes.
She is an Associate member of the Museums Association. She has been involved with the Business Archives Council and is currently a Board Member of the Scottish Mining Museum Collections Trust, a member of the Accreditation Panel, ACE, and is involved with the RLUK Digital Scholarship Working Group, Liber Digital Humanities Working Group, Digital Preservation Coalition: Advocacy and Communication Working Group and an active member of Building Library Labs.
Wendy Turner has worked at the National Museums Scotland for twenty-five years in a number of different roles. Most recently she was Head of the Collections Services department which has responsibility for conservation services, collections care and storage, loans in and out, documentation and digitisation. She has overseen major projects including the creation of new storage facilities at the National Museums Collections Centre; and the de-installation of 1 million stored and displayed Collections for the Royal Museum Project (RMP).
She began her museum career as an Assistant Curator at the Black Country Museum in the West Midlands. This was followed by work for the Scottish Museums Council (now MGS) on the Industrial Heritage Scotland Project and the Conservation Services Survey. She was a founder member of the team that established the original SPECTRUM standard working with MDA (now Collections Trust). She is Curatorial Adviser for Linlithgow Heritage Trust. She has a Masters in Museum Studies from Leicester University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Studies from Napier University.
Ann Millar is an Assistant Director in Research and Innovation at the Scottish Funding Council for Further and Higher Education (SFC) where she has worked since 2004. She has extensive policy development and implementation experience in the fields of research, innovation and knowledge exchange and has in-depth knowledge of the Scottish academic research base. Her current work involves an evaluation of a large thematic group of SFC’s strategic investments, implementing a new online outcome reporting system for SFC’s investments and supporting the development of the Scottish Graduate Schools for the arts and humanities and the social sciences both of which involve large collaborations of Scottish universities.
Ann joined SFC from the Scottish Government, where she held the post of Deputy Chief Researcher. She worked there in a wide range of social policy contexts, undertaking policy research and evaluation studies, managing large-scale and complex programmes of research and translating the outputs of research for use throughout policy process.
Ann is an academician of the Academy of Social Sciences and was a member of the UK Economic and Social Research Council’s Strategic Research Board from 2004-08.
Elsa Cox is Orkney Project Development Manager at Robert Gordon University. The RGU Orkney Project supports the islands with research, expertise and student activity to help overcome challenges faced by the local community. She has 15 years experience in the museum sector, most recently as Senior Curator of Technology at National Museums Scotland where she cared for the energy and civil engineering collections. She led the development of a new energy gallery which opened as part of a major redevelopment project at National Museums Scotland in 2016. Her research interests include energy technology and contemporary collecting and she has published widely in these areas.
Stephen Jackson is Senior Curator, Furniture & Woodwork at National Museums Scotland. He has worked in museums for over twenty years, in national, local authority and university sectors, curating decorative art, design and social history collections. He was involved in the redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland from the master-planning stage to the recent opening of the new Art and Design galleries. His publications range from the 16th to the 20th centuries with a particular focus on Scottish cabinet making. Stephen served on the Collections Advisory Panel of the National Trust for Scotland between 2007 and 2012.
Sally Tuckett is lecturer in dress and textile histories at the University of Glasgow. Her research has focused on the clothing and textile cultures of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Scotland, working closely with museum and archive collections. She was the project researcher on Colouring the Nation: The Turkey Red Printed Cotton Industry in Scotland, a collaborative project between National Museums Scotland and the University of Edinburgh. She has published on national identity and dress in the eighteenth century, and Scottish textile cultures including Ayrshire whitework and tartan.
Alison Stevenson is Head of Learning Resources at The Glasgow School of Art, a role that encompasses the Library, Learning Technology, Archives and Collections. She is also Chair of SCURL (Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries) and a Board Member for SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries). Born and raised in Edinburgh, she spent the nine years prior to starting at the Glasgow School of Art, in January 2013, living in New Zealand. There she worked first as the Director of Te Puhikotuhi o Aotearoa (the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre) and latterly as Associate Director of the Library at Victoria University of Wellington.
Helen Rawson is an experienced museum professional. She spent 19 years working in the Museum Collections Unit of the University of St Andrews, most recently as Co-Director, and earlier as curator and senior curator, and had a lead role in establishing MUSA, the Museum of the University of St Andrews. She has also worked at National Museums Scotland. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience of collections care and management, exhibitions, strategy and policy development, fundraising, and capital projects, including museum and store developments. Her research interests, including her PhD (undertaken part-time while working) focus on the history and development of museum collections.
Before joining Industrial Museums Scotland as Coordinator in 2016, Emma spent over a decade working in community and museum development. Emma was Museum Manager at The Black Watch Castle & Museum for more than 8 years, and oversaw the major museum redevelopment in 2013-14. She was a Museum Mentor and curatorial adviser for 7 years. Emma sits on the Board of Glencoe Folk Museum.
Emma grew up in Fife, Orkney and Shetland, and now lives in Fife. She has an undergraduate degree in Scottish History (2003) and a postgraduate diploma in Museum Studies (2005), both from the University of St. Andrews.
Susan Jeffrey has worked in the museum sector for more than 30 years, starting her career at the pioneering Springburn Community Museum in Glasgow in 1987. She has worked in 5 local authorities across Scotland and England, as a social history and art curator; and service manager for Renfrewshire Museums and East Dunbartonshire Museums Services.
In her current role as a Manager within Renfrewshire’s Heritage Service Susan is responsible for Research and Collections. This includes both Paisley’s wide ranging museum collections – Art, Science, Social History, Natural History, World Cultures, Paisley’s Recognised Collection the Paisley Shawl Collection – and the historic archive collection held within Paisley’s Heritage Centre. Susan is part of the £42 million “Paisley Reimagined Project” to totally transform Paisley Museum, scheduled for completion in 2022, and recently developed Paisley’s Secret Collection, the UK’s first High Street publicly accessible museum store.
Tamsin Russell works for the Museums Association and leads on their workforce and professional development programmes across the UK. She previously worked for National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, National Museums Scotland - all focusing on organisational development and change management; as well as being a past president of the Scottish Museums Federation. Her first role in the sector was as head of training and development for the Science Museum Group, bringing her experience from the private sector - a multi-site retailer. She is an Accreditation Museum Mentor, sits on the Scottish Heritage Angels short-listing panel and the UK wide Heritage Volunteering Group – Steering Committee.
